The family shown in the photo above is the family of José Antonio Sala and Desirée-Anne Cribier. This photo was taken in Laval, France, about the year 1882. The stern young man striking the 'Napoleon" pose was my Grandfather, Charles Sala. The 'baby' in this photo is Carmen, born in 1880.
José Sala (full name : José Antonio Sala Sanches), one of seven children born to Pablo Sala y Sanches in Callosa de Ensarria, province of Alicante, Spain, emigrated to France in 1852. The exact reason for his leaving Spain is not known although a history of Callosa de Ensarria tells that the region underwent a major economic depression during the years 1840 - 1850.
As a young man in Laval, José first worked as a tailor where he met and married a 'local' girl, Desirée-Anne Cribier of Laval. Their first child, Desirée, was born in 1857. Altogether this marriage produced 15 children over a span of 23 years. Three of the children died in infancy (in France) while a fourth child, Ferdinand, died (in France) at the tender age of 4. All of the remaining 11 children reached adulthood and all of them, excepting only the eldest Desirée, emigrated to Canada in 1890 with their parents.
